Recruiters, take your own advice!Posted 11 months ago by Lily-Rose Bird

Recruiters, it's time for us to listen to our own advice!

As recruiters, we spend hours of our day giving candidates advice about how to best prepare for and ace interviews, yet, when it comes to our turn, all those tips can go out the window and cause us to fail on basic interviewing preparation or technique.

Talk about, do as I say, not as I do…

If you’re looking for your next role in tech recruitment or want to make a change to the market, here are some tips to help you through the process:

1. Do your research. Before your interview, take some time to research the company and the technology industry. Show the interviewer that you're serious about the job and that you've taken the time to learn about the company.

2. Be prepared to answer common interview questions. There are a few typical interview questions that you can expect to be asked in a recruitment consultant interview and some that will require you to have prepared answers. These may include:

  • Tell me about your experience in recruitment and the market you have worked in.
  • Billings? Commission? Examples of success?
  • What do you know about the company you are interviewing for?
  • What are your motivations and goals? These can be personal, monetary, and/or professional.
  • Why technology?

3. Be confident and enthusiastic. The interviewer wants to see that you actually want to be in that room! Show them that you're excited about the opportunity and that you're confident in your ability to succeed.

4. Prepare to talk about your experience. The interviewer will be keen to know what you've done in the past and how you can apply your skills to the job. Make sure to highlight your successes and know your figures!

5. Ask questions. You should be asking about the market, how successful the team is, and examples of consultants’ billings. It’s no secret that we don’t do recruitment for a basic salary, and extra earning potential is what drives people to succeed. Let’s not forget though, money is one thing but for most job satisfaction is the driving factor, so don’t ever back away from asking questions about culture, progression, and support. At the end of your interview, you should have all of these queries answered.

6. Show interest in the industry. No one is expecting you to be able to sit behind a computer and code but having an interest in the market is so important – remember you will be speaking to technologists day to day.

Our interview process at Client Server involves speaking to a number of Team Leads and Senior Consultants within the business to get a realistic feel of what it is like to work here. But we find they are most impressed by people who show a genuine interest in us and have gone out of their way to research what we do and have questions to back this.

Remember finding the right fit goes both ways; the company and you!

So, don't fall at the first hurdle and take your own advice! By following these tips, you can make a great impression on whoever you’re interviewing with as well as come out of that interview knowing whether that is where you truly see yourself working.
