Powering Potential: How to Change Jobs and Find Your Feet Somewhere NewPosted 9 months ago by Lily-Rose Bird

As a technology recruiter, you know that the industry is constantly changing and evolving so why shouldn’t we be doing the same? New technologies are emerging, new companies are being formed, and the demand for skilled tech professionals is growing. This can be an exciting time to be a recruiter, but if you are not in an environment where you can adapt and grow, you are going to be left behind.

So how do you know when it's time to make a change? It will be different for everyone but here are a few common reasons;

  • You're not challenged anymore. You should always be learning and developing your skills. If you're not, it's time to find a place where you have a progression plan to continue to push you to the next level.
  • You're not happy with your company culture. If you don’t agree or feel happy with the culture at your current company, it is going affect overall job satisfaction.
  • You're not getting the opportunities you want. If you're ambitious and want to grow your career, you need to find a company that will give you the opportunities you need to succeed (the sky should be the limit!).

If any of these relate to you, it might be time to start thinking about changing companies, but you need to be sure that you break the cycle and don’t jump into a situation with the same issues! So, you need to keep in mind the following when making a decision.

  • Do your research. We can be trigger-happy when we get something in our head but before you start applying for new jobs, take some time to research different companies. What is their culture like? What are their opportunities for growth? What are their values? Make sure you only put your time into interview processes for companies that actually interest you… don’t spread yourself too thin for opportunities that don’t excite you!
  • Network. We all know the saying it’s who you know, not what you know, so networking is a great way to learn about new opportunities and connect with people who can help you land your next job. Connect with people on LinkedIn and reach out to people to get first-hand knowledge of the companies you are looking at.
  • Be prepared to ask tough questions. You are in this situation for a reason and you need to be 100% sure that your next move is the right one! In the interview/offer process, you need to be asking questions about what you can achieve, what others have achieved, and how they see you progressing.
  • Make a smooth transition. No one ever wants bad blood so make sure you leave a company amicably! Industries are small and it isn’t impossible that you could end up looking at a company further down the line where former colleagues work. Thank your colleagues for their support!

Changing companies can be an intimidating move, but it can also be a great opportunity for growth and career progression. If you’re going to make the leap make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons and most importantly in the correct way!
