Powering Potential: How to approach an interview with confidencePosted 9 months ago by Lily-Rose Bird

As recruiters, we spend hours of our day giving candidates advice about how to best prepare for and ace interviews, yet, when it comes to our turn, all those tips can go out the window and cause us to fail on basic interviewing preparation or technique.

Talk about, do as I say, not as I do…

If you’re looking for your next role in tech recruitment or want to make a change to the market, here are some tips to help you through the process:

  • Do your research. Show the interviewer that you're serious about the job and that you've taken the time to learn about the company.
  • Be prepared to answer common interview questions. There are a few typical interview questions that you can expect to be asked and some that will require you to have prepared answers. These may include:
    • Tell me about your experience in recruitment and the market you have worked in.
    • Billings? Commission? Examples of success?
    • What do you know about the company you are interviewing for?
    • What are your motivations and goals? These can be personal, monetary, and/or professional.
  • Be confident and enthusiastic. The interviewer wants to see that you actually want to be in that room! Show them that you're excited about the opportunity and that you're confident in your ability to succeed.
  • Prepare to talk about your experience. They will be keen to know what you've done in the past and how you can apply your skills to the job. Make sure to highlight your successes and know your figures!
  • Ask questions. You should be asking about the market, how successful the team is, and examples of consultants’ billings. It’s no secret that we don’t do recruitment for a basic salary, and extra earning potential is what drives people to succeed. Not only that but job satisfaction is another key driving factor, so don’t back away from asking questions about culture, progression, and support.
  • Show interest in the industry. No one is expecting you to be able to sit behind a computer and code but having an interest in the market is so important – remember you will be speaking to technologists day to day.

Finding the right fit goes both ways; the company and you! So, don't fall at the first hurdle and take your own advice! Let's practice what we preach and inject some of that recruiter wisdom into our own job hunt strategies.
