Gavin O'Reilly: From Junior Consultant to Team Lead

Gavin O’Reilly first crossed paths with Client Server as a competitor. He’d be on early briefing calls and couldn’t help but be impressed by the way the Client Server team operated. "I thought to myself, if you can’t beat them, join them!"

In summer 2020, he did just that, coming on board as a Junior Consultant. Fast forward five years, and Gavin is now a Team Lead, heading up the DevOps and Cyber Security recruitment function in London.

Pushing Progression

One thing Gavin noticed straight away at Client Server was how clear the path to progression is.

"The metrics are so clear, there’s no grey area. You’re in control of your own success here. Unlike some recruitment firms where progression can feel vague or out of reach, Client Server is proactive about pushing people forward. If you put in the work, the business backs you all the way.”

Proudest Achievement

For Gavin, stepping up into a Team Lead role has been the standout moment of his career so far.

"It’s something I always wanted to do, but the move into leadership was definitely a learning curve. I’m still learning how to be a better leader every day."

What’s made the difference? The support and advice from others who’ve made the same transition. Having that shared experience and advice has been invaluable, and Gavin has fully embraced the new responsibility that comes with leading a team.

What Makes Client Server Stand Out?

Gavin’s clear on what keeps him motivated:

"Working for a company that genuinely wants to see you hit your career milestones makes the job so much more enjoyable. Honestly, I can’t see myself working anywhere else."

But it’s not just about career growth. The culture at Client Server plays a massive part too. Over the years, Gavin’s built close friendships with like-minded people across the business.

"It’s great to come in every day and work alongside people I consider close friends, as well as colleagues."

Advice for Success

Gavin’s advice is simple but powerful:

  • Pick a technical vertical you’re genuinely interested in. Dive deep into understanding the market.
  • Be a true consultant. At Client Server, it’s not about spreading yourself thin. It’s about offering strategic insights to both candidates and clients, making sure you’re adding real value every step of the way.
