Mike Bailey: The Rise to Principal Consultant
Client Server

Before joining Client Server, Mike was leading a team in catering and hospitality recruitment. Keen to get into the tech space, he took the leap, even if it meant stepping back into a Consultant role to learn the ropes.
"I came in with a temp recruitment background, so starting in the contract team felt like the right move to get familiar with tech recruitment. But it wasn’t the smoothest start… between IR35, Brexit, and then Covid, it was a pretty wild ride!"
Despite a tough few years, Client Server stood firm, keeping the team together and supporting them through the challenges. Mike pushed through, adapted, and came out the other side stronger, climbing the ranks to Senior, and now Principal Consultant, with some healthy commission cheques and pay rises along the way.
Support That Makes a Difference
One of the key ingredients to Mike’s growth? Learning from the best.
"I’ve been lucky to work closely with some seriously experienced consultants here, as well as people who really know their stuff in the tech world. Being able to pick their brains has been massive in helping me have confident, credible conversations with clients and candidates alike."
That day-to-day mentorship has been a game-changer in building his knowledge and credibility.
Big Wins & Lightbulb Moments
Mike is candid about the realities of recruitment, especially the early days.
"Imposter syndrome is real, especially at the start! For a while, it felt like I was winging it. But then, without even realising it, you hit this moment where everything clicks. Suddenly, newer consultants are coming to you for advice and guidance, and that’s when you know you’re really making progress."
It’s a great reminder that perseverance pays off, and growth often happens quietly in the background until it’s undeniable.
What Makes Client Server Special
For Mike, it’s the people and the culture that truly set Client Server apart.
"Genuinely, it’s just a great bunch of people. It’s a friendly, supportive environment, and there’s always a laugh to be had along the way. Unlike some agencies, it’s not cut-throat. If you’re putting in the effort, you’ll get the support and time you need to succeed."
That balance of support and fun helps make even the toughest days more manageable.
Advice for New Joiners
Mike keeps it simple and honest:
"Client Server has a specific process that’s proven to work, so embrace it and learn from the experienced people around you. Recruitment is all about what you put in: work hard, stick with it, and the rewards will come."
