Data Scientist
Data Scientist
In the modern world, companies are always seeking new ways of how to make sense with a monumental volume of disparate data. Data Scientists are tasked with transforming this sea of data into actionable insights. These insights are valuable and can have a profound impact, so Data Scientists are highly sought after in just about every field.
Data Science is generally an interdisciplinary area of scientific processes, methods, systems and algorithms to obtain knowledge or awareness of data in multiple forms.
Data Scientists combine computer science, modelling statistic, analytics and mathematical skills to uncover answers to big questions organisations may have, to assist them in making objective decisions. Data Scientists will work closely with key business stakeholders and will use all the tools they have to determine how data can be used to achieve the business goals.
A Data Scientist could be responsible for designing data modelling processes, creating algorithms and predictive models to extract the data the business needs. For a Data Scientist, they will follow a general process for gathering and analysing data that begins with asking the right questions, acquiring, processing and cleaning the data, applying data science methods, models and techniques and ends with measuring results and sharing them with stakeholders.
Data Scientists in their own right take ownership of designing data modelling processes to create algorithms and predictive models, and perform custom analysis. However, a Data Scientist will also perform tasks associated with a Data Analyst or Data Engineer.
A Data Scientist will have strong statistical analysis skills, machine learning experience and typically a degree or reputable qualification in computer science (to successfully apply the principles of AI, database systems, human interaction and numerical analysis to their work). Data Scientists will also need to be comfortable writing code in a variety of languages, such as Java, Python and SQL.
Aside from technical and data science-specific skills, a good Data Scientist will possess good business intuition and interpersonal skills, to effectively communicate with a variety of audiences. A strong Data Scientist will be naturally analytical and inquisitive, able to apply objective analysis of facts to reach a conclusion.
Everything we do leaves some kind of data footprint. Data is generated every second of every day, and in turn, the employment of Data Scientists is expected to continually rise, much faster than other professions. The increasing demand for new technology grows in conjunction with the demand for qualified, experienced Data Scientists. This also translates to competitive starting and continuing salaries for Data Scientists.
