IT Support Engineer

IT Support Engineer

An IT Support Engineer is a respected resource within any organisation. The role of an IT Support Engineer will vary depending on the organisation’s operating system, workflow and network configuration and needs, meaning an IT Support Engineer could work alone, be confined to a single team or assigned to multiple teams.

The core objective of an IT Support Engineer is to provide ‘1st line’ (desk side / help desk) support to internal or external customers, answering support queries via phone, email or onsite, and resolving hardware and software problems. IT Support Engineers work across all industries, and may be referred to as a Customer Support Specialist / Engineer depending on whether customers are internal or external. Businesses have no universal structure, therefore there is no consensus on how IT Support Teams are organised.

Technical Support is a vast area, and each job title differs slightly based on requirements of the role. An IT Support Engineer may also be known as a Technical Support Engineer, Helpdesk Engineer, Service Desk Engineer, Windows Engineer, Systems Engineer, Cloud Engineer etc. An IT Support Engineer will need knowledge of one or more operating system, e.g. Windows, Linux, MacOS.

Businesses do not have universal structure, therefore there is no consensus on how companies organise their technical support teams. IT Support Engineers fulfil a support capacity where needed, some offices may have a small IT department dedicated to resolving internal issues on a daily basis, others have a robust organised network of engineers ready to deploy greater scale technical support when required.

The nature of support means responsibilities of an IT Support Engineer vary on a day to day basis. An IT Support Engineer will be required to diagnose and troubleshoot technical problems, be proactive when dealing with issues, taking ownership of problems detected from identification to resolution and maintaining a relevant log of all activity. More accomplished IT Support Engineers may provide necessary training or advice for other members on their Technical Support team.

As businesses (and their customers) are becoming increasingly reliant on computers and technology, the demand for skilled IT Support Engineers is growing. Career prospects for an IT Support Engineer are good, and progression will be facilitated by obtaining the relevant IT and Technical Support certifications, staying ahead of market trends, developing foreign language skills and growing knowledge of other technical areas.
