Chief Technology Officer
Chief Technology Officer (CTO)
A Chief Technology Officer (sometimes known as a Chief Technologist, Chief Technical Officer or CTO) is an executive-level position in a technology or scientifically powered organisation. Not to be confused with a Chief Information Officer; a CTO will manage decisions that comprehend the company’s overarching technological infrastructure, whilst considering the company’s strategic and business objectives. A CTO will also play a key role in shaping research and development goals within a company.
The position ‘Chief Technology Officer’ rose to prominence adjacent to the rise of information technology; as technology advanced there was a growing need for an all-encompassing individual who could manage high-level decisions whilst also understanding the granular details of what the company is working on.
According to Investopedia (2017) a CTO ‘examied the short and long term needs of an organisation, and utilises capital to make investments designed to help the organisation reach its objectives’. Furthermore, the Chief Technology Officer holds the highest level executive position and typically leads the technology or engineering department within an organisation. A CTO is a unique, highly qualified individual who is primarily concerned with long-term issues, whilst also having an in depth understanding of the relevant technological field.
CTOs have become prevalent in all technology-based companies across a spectrum of industries. Base line requirements for a CTO vary, most CTOs will hold a bachelors, masters or even doctorate, relevant certifications and years of experience within the relevant technology field and strong technology-related management skills.
The base salary for an accomplished CTO is inevitably on the higher side, approximately sitting between £80k and £200k, with Chief Technology Officer roles in London offering more. However, a grassroots 2-man start up may also have a CTO, so salary for a CTO depends on a number of factors.
